You're right - a "war tax" would bring the fact that we're spending billions on Iraq home to people. Right now unless you've got family in the military or have someone in your community with an amputated leg or worse the Iraq/Afghanistan war is something that's not too personal to you.
But if you see a new pay deduct every two weeks for the "War Tax" and they then reinstate the draft so your own kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews were subject to serivcce, male and female, then some of the cheerleaders might rethink their positions.
Wonder what Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld would do if they were 18 today instead of in their 50s and 60s. They might just be looking for student deferments again, stay in grad school an extra year, put it off and put it off till it was over. Or get a slot in the Texas Air National Guard when nobody else could get in.
The campaign has been one of running for office by "gag line" and sound bite. And so far the Republicans have joked and quipped their way to an eight point lead. Do anything but discuss the way they've botched the fight againt terrorism, don't mention deficits, let's leave Social Security on the back burner, same with any real discussion on health care or drugs.
Let's just keep saying Bush will stay the course and Kerry's a flip-flopper. What a terrible way to choose a president - who can repeat the same stupid line the most and get away with it wins.
To those from outside the U.S. who visit here - yes we do this every four years. I've seen a lot of elections and this is one of the worst in that the Republicans have simply avoided the real questions and keep pounding Kerry on his character and judgement. No matter that their candidate has flaws on his flaws -- whoever says it long enough and loud enough about the other guy seems to get the prize for long and loud and believable. Frannkly they're better at silly, dirty politics. Shameless -- all the while pretending to be the Party of God.
The leadership of the Republican party will do anything to retain power. They cannot envision giving it up. White House, Congress and now they're setting their sites on the Supreme Court. If there's a Bush 2nd term I'm sure that's high on their agenda although they're not even talking about that right now - "let's not scare the moderates away will we're reelected then we can cement our gains for the next 30 years by putting our type on the Supreme Court". A phoney quote I made up but one I'd bet is running through their minds.
I'm sick - sick of the right, the Bush White House, the Bush family, and those who're behind the scenes scripting our national destiny right now.
