In 1996 I was working as a security and safety officer at Lee's Summit Hospital in Lee's Summit, MO. This was during the 1996 Olympics. The news came out that a Richard Jewell a security guard working the Georgia Centennial Olympic Park was a real hero. It was reported that he found a suspicious package and began moving people away from it and that it turned out to be a bomb and killed one person and wounded more than 100.
The employees had the TV on and I we were working the midnight shift and they all were saying wow..that guy was a real hero. I said I bet he put the bomb there. They were shocked that I would even think of that..Well it turns out the FBI and the world started reporting that he was the guy that put the bomb there. For months they made the poor guy's life a living hell. They ran all types of stories about him and none of them were good.
It turned out that he was a hero and he had nothing to do with putting the bomb there.
He has died, at age 44 of natural causes, at his home in Woodbury, GA.
Here is the CNN Story.
I am not sure when I am going to meet up with Richard Jewell. I hope I got a few more years before I meet up with him. I will tell him I am sorry. I hope he forgives me. He was a real hero.
