The Miami Heard web site has an excellent article. It is about a publicly owned high-rise looking for people 55 or owner who want to rent. If you read the entire article it gives you a good view of what is going on down here in FL right now. Three years ago there was great demand here for "low cost" rental. Pembroke Pines had a waiting list with 800 names on it. So they built 210 one-bedroom apartments. People 55 and older can rent one for $710.00 a month. Today 170 of the 210 apartments remain vacant.
The story tells you more about what is going on here and I am sure around the United States. You and I are spending 57 percent of our money on necessities.
Nearly 7,500 homes were foreclosed on in this area in February and that is a 150 percent increase from the same month in 2007.
In Miami-Dade there are 447,317 people who are 60 and older and of that number 191,224 live at or near the poverty level ($10,210.00 or less a year) and I am one of them.
I am living with my son and grandson and I pay $650.00 a month on rent and it is hard to come up with that each month. So I know I could not afford $710.00 a month.
Living with family is a safety net for me. I do not need to own a car and they help out. I do not have to worry about not having food to eat. I can always steal some of their food. Smile
The American people are hurting. I do not think the people in Washington are aware of it. I know they say they care and they are going to do something but I do not think they have a clue.
