I made some progress today. I made my daily video blog and posted it. I installed CoffeCup, DivX, ecto for Windows, Logitech cameras software, Mega Manager, Paint Shop Pro 7 and ACDSee.
I could not get SnagIt to accept my code. 
I attempted to watch a movie live from Netflix but it said my Internet connection was slow and it would take 7 hours!
I installed and played a couple of times Civilization III.
If your wondering how "Civilization III" does on my new computer I would say it is fast. There is little delay in moving of men. I am not sure the video is all that much better. 
I have not installed "Age of Mythology" yet. I am missing the CD. It maybe in the old computer.

I heard from a guy that has been visiting Howard's Notebook for years and years. He did some research on his old email addresses. He got his first email address in 1993 and it was because I was bring in Internet to Kansas City on my BBS.
The domain for email was:  [email protected]
My computer dialed Omaha NB a number of times each day and send and picked up mail and newsgroups. That cost me a some money. Back in the "old days" long distance calls cost a lot of money. 
Anyone else remember getting their email via Howard's Notebook? 

I think I will play with multiple desktops right now. I have an Nvidia video card. I have messed with it in the past but I got a computer with 4 CPU units and 2 GB of memory. I think I will take it out for a test spin and see what it will do.

Bay to Breakers 2007 and 2008

Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is installed

   I was up until about 0400 hours and then went to bed.  I got up about 0900 hours and I am working on the computer again.  I downloaded and installed the driver for the Quickcam Pro 9000.  I just took the photo above with it.  The Quickcam Pro 9000 is an excellent USB camera.
    For years I have had an external USB hard drive hooked up to my computer.  I hooked it up and it is fried.  Not sure what happened to the drive.  It had my back update on it and lots of programs that I have paid for over the years.  Some of them I can download again.
   
    I got my email working again. 
    Later today I will make a video blog using this new computer and we will see how it does.  I should have a much better computer for making videos.  I will get it a tr later today.
   

Windows XP Home Edition

  I started over again with the computer.  I put on Windows XP Home Edition.  That is the same software I was running on the old computer and I have never had a problem with it.  I have used it on a number of different computers.
  I installed it on the new computer and I cannot get sound.  It will not install the drivers.  The installer for the RealTex HD driver will crash.  I tried everything.  Nothing seems to work.  I have an external USB sound device around here someplace but cannot find it right now.
  I did an update of the software and on the second attempt to update I downloaded four packages but they will not install.  It goes to install and halts and says there is a problem.
  I will stick with this software.  My guess is that I will work out the problems one at a time.
  I have a lot of software that I need to install.  I have not installed the Logitech Pro 9000 software yet.  I also do not have the Palm software installed.  I have a lot of work that needs to be done.

 

  Update:  It is 0330 hours and I got sound on the computer.  I dug around in some boxes and found the USB sound card.  I still cannot get some Microsoft updates to install.

Enjoying Ubuntu 64 bit

  My web pages load so fast now and everything is so new with the install of Linux.  You should see the fancy stuff I can do with desktops.  I have four desktops setup and I can move things between the desktops.  It is sweet.

  The system monitor display is much better than the Windows one.  Plus your seeing correct I have FOUR CPU units.  The screen above is when I was uploading a video to YouTube.

    This is what I been saying.  No one listens to me.  If I was a billionaire you might listen to me.  Smile
    Warren Buffett seems like a pretty decent person. 

    I am having fun playing with 64 bit Linux.  I made a mistake however.  I should have gone with 32 bit.  The other day I got my Logitech Pro 9000 to work with 32 bit Linux.  I may see later tonight if I can install 32 bit Ubunti on this hard drive without it killing my 64 bit install. 

Ubuntu 8.04 (Linux) 64 bit

   I decided if I have to spend hours installing software I might as well do it right.  I just installed Ubuntu 8.04  7.10 64 bit on this new computer.
   I now have a computer with an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU (2.40 GB speed) with 2 GB of fast memory operating with 64 bit Linux software. The video card is a NVidia 8600 GT with 512 fast memory.  The entire hard drive is set up for Linux. 
   I have not done the upgrade yet to Ubuntu 8.04.  I am going to wait until I decide to take a nap and let it do all that work as I sleep.

   The fan or fans on this computer are very loud.  The computer feels cool but I suspect things are running hot inside the computer.  Since I began with computers back in 1978 I been leaving them turned on 24/7.  I may turn this one off to give my ears a rest.


 

Goodbye Computers and Internet!

 

I attempted to put Windows XP Professional on my new computer.  It killed the install of Ubuntu that took hours to install.  I did not get the Windows install to work.  The MBR of course got nuked.
  Right now the new computer is not working.  I am going to have to nuke the drive and start over.

   I hooked up my old computer and am using it right now.
   It would not let me boot up into Windows.  The computer was off for the first time in years and now decided it likes to be on a  vacation.

    I have made a mess out of all of this...  I can not blame Microsoft.  I have to blame myself again.

    I am going to re-boot this old computer and see if I can get into Windows and check my email.  Wish me luck.
