Thursday Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin will debate in St. Louis, Missouri.
"...There's a lot of anticipation surrounding the VP debate because Palin has remained largely on script in her first month on the campaign trail.
Although Biden has a reputation for impetuous and brutally honest remarks, he's also a long-time senator with decades of experience in the public eye.
As chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the 65-year-old Delaware senator is well versed on foreign policy.
Biden has done nearly 100 interviews since being picked as Obama's VP on August 23.
Palin, on the other hand, did her third interview with a national television network last week. On Wednesday, she held her first media availability with her traveling reporters.
The Republican VP candidate has received less than stellar reviews in the few interviews that she has done..." CNN
A friend of mine (Dick) thinks that she will announce on Wednesday that she is not going to debate. I do not know what is going to happen.
The McCain people sure have not been helping Palin. They should tell her to just be herself and be honest and do not try and pretend that she is in the class of McCain, Obama and Biden. I would tell her to keep it simple, smile and show some humor.
When she is asked when she got her passport she should say I just got one. Why are you saying a person needs a passport to run for office in the United States? She should say less than 20% of Americans own a passport.
When she is asked how many heads of state she has met she should say not very many I would want to meet the American public.
She should just be plain, simple and honest.
If she goes into the debate and attempts to duke it out with Joe Biden it will not be pretty. Of course Joe Biden has to be very careful. If I were Joe Biden I would treat her with the up most respect. I would even go to her defense if it would work out good.
If Joe Biden goes into the debate and beats up on her it will not help him. We already know that he maybe the best of all the people running this time.
If I were Joe Biden I would think HUMILITY. He does not have to blow his own horn.
It is sort of like McCain. John McCain does not have to tell us that he is a hero. We already know it and we like our heroes to not speak about it. I am not sure if it is something we got from books or movies or just why it is that way.
My guess is that the McCain/Bush people are giving Sarah Paliln a set of stock answers. No matter what she is asked they hope that the stock answers will cover it.
It reminds me of the story of the king that had to meet each day with his subjects. He told his advisers that he wanted one statement that he could use each time because he was tired of listening and having to respond.
So his they came up with the statement "and this too shall pass."
We will see what happens. What do you think will happen?

“What happens when America's airwaves fill with hate? BILL MOYERS JOURNAL takes a tough look at the hostile industry of "Shock Jock" media with a hard-hitting examination of its effects on our nation's political discourse. The JOURNAL traveled to Knoxville, where a recent shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church has left the pastor asking what role hateful speech from popular right-wing media personalities may have played in the tragedy. "A lot of people are hurling insults from the safety of television studios, the safety of radio studio, the safety of cyberspace," says Rev. Chris Buice, "So that's a void in our community — the chance to be in the same room and to have these exchanges and remember the humanity of the person on the other side."
The Reach of Talk Radio
Talk radio is loud — very loud. According to TALKERS magazine, the leading publication of the talk radio industry, Rush Limbaugh attracts more than 14 million listeners across the nation each week, one of the largest audiences in any broadcast medium; Sean Hannity, over 13 million; Michael Savage, more than 8 million…”

(CNN) -- “Pirates who seized a Ukrainian vessel loaded with tanks and weapons off the African coast have lowered their ransom demand to $5 million…”
I am sure you have been reading about the Somalia pirates for a long time.
Our military is pretty busy right now but I would like to see the nations of the world put a large force in the area and kill all the pirates.
I am talking just fucking blow them out of the water. If you do get your hands on them hang them on the ship right on the spot. Just like in the old days.
This is 2008 and we should not have to be dealing with pirates on the high sea. Kill them all and let God sort them out.
I just read the CNN story and it sounds like the Russian navy is sending ships to the waters and is going to deal with pirates in those waters from now on.
I wish them luck.

CNN and other news organizations report that Obama came out on top in the debate.
OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) -- “A national poll of people who watched the first presidential debate suggests that Barack Obama came out on top, but there was overwhelming agreement that both Obama and John McCain would be able to handle the job of president if elected…”
Obama has pulled ahead 5 or 6% in polls of voters. The polls were taken before the debate.
My guess is that Barack Obama will pick up 3 or 4% from the debate. I do not think he was a clear and big winner in the debate. Others do not agree with me. People seem to think he won.
I think they are going on looks. Sure John McCain did not look to happy. He looked old and sort of pissed. I am 67 years old and I know people do not like old people. So I think a lot of people see a young man standing next to an old fart and they judge the debate on looks. I wonder what did people think that did not watch the debate but heard it on the radio.

The following is an email I got from a friend:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/27/opinion/27herbert.html
“Don't think you have to be registered wit NYT to see this column on Palin. The interview he quotes was pretty damning and he proposes replacing her which is what McCain should do but if he does that he looks even more erratic. This year comes down to your basic mind set - and 75% of the people have a "party" that they'll defend no matter how their guy does - leaving maybe 25% who're truly undecided and I worry that many of them are undecided because they haven't cared enough to decide. That doesn't bode well for the assumption that an informed country will make the right decision. In fact I think we've disproven that or maybe we should give up on the idea we're an informed country. I'd actually worry about someone undecided at this point - we've heard from both parties and candidates and the info is there to come to a conclusion.

CNN reports that Paul Newman has died.
“Paul Leonard Newman (January 26, 1925 - September 26, 2008) was an American actor, film director, entrepreneur, race car driver, racing team owner and humanitarian. He won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and an Emmy award, along with many honorary awards. He won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing and his race teams won several championships in open wheel Indy Car racing. He was also the founder of Newman's Own, a food company from which Newman donated all profits and royalties to charity. As of May 2007, these donations have exceeded US$220 million. Newman died at his long-time home in Westport, Connecticut after a battle with lung cancer…” Wikipedia
I was a fan of Paul Newman. I love movies. I think the movie I enjoyed the most would be “Road to Perdition” (2002). I also liked “Nobody’s Fool” (1994), “The Verdict” (1982) and many others.

As Barack Obama and John McCain square off in Mississippi tonight, cable channel C-SPAN will be providing searchable, embeddable clips of the debate, accompanied by realtime commentary from livebloggers and Twitterpundits, at a newly-launched debate hub that seeks to provide a one-stop shop for info-junkies.
C-SPAN is scarcely alone in trying to integrate social media into coverage of the presidential debates: Current.TV's "Hack the Debate" will superimpose contemporaneous Tweets over a live stream of the event. Twitter has its own election channel. And Reason magazine will be Twittering pseudo-participation in the exchange from Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr.
But C-SPAN's project may be the most ambitious. According to C-SPAN producer Ben O'Connell, who this acknowledges is the hoary public-interest channel's "first foray into new media—that is, Web 2.0 social media," describes it as an element of a broader plan to transform C-SPAN into a "platform agnostic media network" that "makes all of C-SPAN's assets to people in whatever media form they choose to utilize."
The above is from ARS Technica site.
The S-SPAN site is great. You can see video of the debate and you can read comments from blogs and live Twitter coverage.
People seem to be saying that Obama won the debate. I am a Democrat and I could not say he won. He sure did not lose the debate but I saw no knockout.
