Someone did a search on Google for “who invented blogging.” ShowMeBlog was number two on the list and they came here.
The first link when you do the Google search is to Yahoo Answers. They seem to say Jorn Barger in December of 1997. Sorry wrong answer. I was doing it in 1982!
The next link takes you to ShowMeBlog and what I wrote in 01/09/2006.
The next link take you to Cnet News. That is a post that I have yelled and screamed about. When it was first written they named three or four people and gave a date of 1995. They have since gone in a number of times and edited the post. They have softened their statements and left it open that others were doing things like it. I still object to the post and expect better from Cnet.
The next link is to a blog called “Blogger Stories” and I need to check out that site sometime. But the link is for June 12, 2006 and is by Ann Handley telling how she invented blogging. I am doing this on the fly so I am reading it fast but I am not sure if she is kidding or if it is a joke or what the heck it is…but it is well written. I will give her that. What is interesting is that she says her blogging starting when she was a pen pal and that she was 8 or 9 years of age and got pen pals from an international organization.
I am not going to say that I invented pen pals. I am not that mental yet but back in the late 50s I worked on that sort of project and was asked by the first People-to-People organization to help them form and I signed the first PtoP charter in Kansas City (MO) and I was signing for those sort of people.
So who invented blogging?
Hi Jim -- Funny that my link comes up so high in Google. I was mostly kidding that I invented blogging. I didn't invent the *platform*.. but I nonetheless was making the point that the kind of writing I've always done found a home once the internet and blogs came along... in other words, once the technology caught up with me, this was an art I had been practicing for years!
Take care --
Ann
