This is the time of the year that people on Social Security hear from them. They tell you if you are going to get a cost of living increase. We have not got one now for two years in a roll.
They send you a form each year at this time telling you how much you will get each month. (I will be getting $1,155.00 a month.) They tell you how much they will take out for your Medicare insurance (It is $96.50 a month next year.)
We all like to say how bad the government is and how it does not work well. All my contacts with SS have been excellent. I had not problems signing up for SS and I had have no problems dealing with them since I been on SS.
This is also the time of year you can change your medical insurance. You can just take the government plan and deal with them or you can sign up with one of the private insurance corporations they have approved. If you pick one of the private insurance corporations they you deal with them for medical insurance.
Dealing with them can be a pain in the ass. They are set up to make a profit. So if they can get out of paying somehow they will do it. I am keeping the AARP plan this year. I even play an extra $37.00 a month to them to get better dental and hearing and vision benefits.
Social Security each year will send you some information to tell you that if you are living on a very limited amount of money each year that they have a “Medicare Prescription Drug Assistance” program.
They will pay some of your prescription costs depending on how little you live on.
I have a drug prescription insurance program that pays most of my drug costs. But I got a couple of prescriptions that have to pay $19.00 for each of them. The drug assistance programs pays about $2.00 or so of each of them for me.
The paper work that you get each year from SS that tells you how much you are getting from them you need to save that paper work. Many people want to see it. In order to get some services you have to give a copy of it to them. I got a free life time bus and rail pass for Miami/Dade by showing it.
Here in Dallas/Fort Worth they do not give you a free bus/rail pass. You get a discount one but you have to prove you age. I think I had to show the letter from SS to lease this apartment. They wanted proof of income. So it is something you want to hang on to each year.
I am very happy with Social Security. I wish I was getting more money. But think God I am getting SS. It is all I have to live on. If it was not for SS I would have $175.00 a month to live on.
If you are young you think old age is a long time off.. Believe me .. It comes up on you fast.
Do what experts say and save 10% of what you make right from day one of working.
You do not want to end up living on just SS.
Well, you're getting almost double what I get from them and yep, no cost of living increase for 2 years now. Tell that to the utility companies who have raised their rates both years and to the stores who are charging more now too. Where do they get the idea there's been no cost of living increase?
