I wish I had a car but if I did I would not get out with a chance of sleet for DFW. The people down here have no idea how to drive in that sort of weather.
It seems like I spent half my life driving on ice, snow and sleet.
Many a time I was out driving around on solid ice.
It is 28 degrees here in Fort Worth and that is cold for here. Please do not laugh at us Europe and the north part of the United States.
After I lived in Orlando (FL) and Jimmy and I came to Carrollton (TX) I did FAA control tower security. One morning when I got off work at Love Field I headed home and there was some sleet and ice on a few spots on the streets and there was not much traffic (might have been a Sunday morning) but the few cars I saw were having problems. For me, having lived in Kansas City, it was nothing. I had no problems. It was big news on the TV that day. Not that I knew how to drive on ice but that they got ice in DFW area.
I remember the times I went into Raymore PD and took out a car and I was the only officer on the roads or even on duty for the city. There were times when there was snow all over the place and I had to patrol city streets and country roads. I never had a problem.
One time however… It was not winter but the Kansas City area had not had a drop of rain for months. I was running radar and it was about 3 AM and almost no traffic. We just started to have a little mist (rain) coming down for the first time in months. I was thinking I am one of the first to know we are getting some rain. A car came speeding down 58 highway and I hit the gas and pulled out on 58 highway and the highway was SLICK. My patrol car did a 360 degree spin on the road. Scared the hell out of me.. I drove on down the highway a little bit but I turned off the red lights and looked around to make sure no one saw me make an ass out of myself.
I went on down to a closed gas station and pulled into their lot. A car came down the highway and pulled in and the drive said.. Did you get that guy? I said no. He said.. Wow we saw him speeding and he did a 360 degree spin on the highway. I do not think they knew that was me or they were just having some fun with me.
Funny that a little rain made me lose control and all those years of being on ice and snow did not.
When I had my own patrol and guard service for about a year I did spend one entire night checking my accounts in a bad snow storm. Then when it was morning headed home and was about a block from home and came up to a stop sign and went off into a little ditch and put a dent in the front of the car.
Well it is 7:10 AM. I been up since 2 AM. I think I will just go to bed and when I wake up maybe it will be a bit warmer.
