National ‘motel kids’ problem

  I just read California chef feeds children for free on CNN. 
The “hero” Bruno Serato feeds more than 300 children each night in Anaheim, California.  
 
  We should not have hunger in America.  But most of all we should not have children in the United States going to bed hungry.

  NPR has some information on Hunger in America. 
 
  I suspect that politics is part of the problem.  I am sure the evil empire (the Republican Party) will say that we can not afford to feed American children.  I am sure the evil empire will say well they need to get a job.  The evil empire will say that the problem is that we give foreign aid to other nations.  I am sure that the evil empire will say it is all the wet back Mexicans here in the United States. 
  The Republicans will say if we would just cut the taxes on the rich people that somehow that would feed the children. 

  We have so many problems here in the United States that we need to work on.  I just do not see how we can get anything done with the evil empire in Washington.
 
  To tell you the truth I did not think about the problem of “motel kids” but I am sure that is a real problem. 
  Thank God for people like Bruno Serato.

Water water everywhere

  I just ordered a Pur 18 Cub Dispenser with one Pitcher Filter.

  If you been reading ShowMeBlog and Howard’s Notebook you will know that I drink just about zero water.  I get all my water from Coke.  Russell drinks a lot of water.
  My hope is that I can get Russ to use the water dispenser with filter and we will not have to haul in bottled water.  I also am telling myself that I will start drinking some water.  We will see about that.

  I also ordered a Sodastream Jet Starter Kit. 

 

  The goal is not so much reduce the cost of the drinks we get as it is to cut out the need to haul all the bottles and cans home.  If the cost is less that will be great.
  I am not sure if I will like the taste of the “sodamix” or not.  We will see what happens.  I will let you know how it works out for me.

Crockpot

  I got a 7 quart crockpot today.  I make chili sometimes and I think using the crockpot might let me make more of it at a time and keep it warm and ready to eat longer.
  I also want to make some home made soup.  I like pot roast but have never made any so I want to try making it.
  We will see if I use the crockpot.  I often want something and get it and never use it.

Fried Green Tomatoes

  I hate to admit it but I loved the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes.”  The reason I hate to admit it is that I think it is a “chick” movie.  Real men do not like movies like that we love movies like “Road House.”  I, of course, not only loved the movie road house I used his line “My way or the highway.”  I was working hospital security at a small hospital next to 71 highway and a guy was at the admitting desk being a prick.  So I went over and ended up telling him “My way or the highway.” 

  Back to “Fried Green Tomatoes” movie.  I been wonder what in the hell fried green tomatoes taste like and are they any good.
 
 

  Yesterday I ate at Captain D’s (see photo on left) and they offered fried green tomatoes.  I got three and I think it was 99 cents for them.  I am glad I did not order the 7 of them.
  Now I am not sure if their fried green tomatoes are a true sample of them or not.  I was not impressed and I did not even eat two of them.
  Now I know what fried green tomatoes taste like after all of these years.

 

  I was the “mayor” at Caption D’s but the other day someone beat me out.  This visit did not get me back as mayor yet.  The mayor thing is a Foursquare thing. 

Braum’s Light Key Lime Pie Ice Cream

  I am a very simple guy and I often do not try new things.  Tonight I went down to Braum’s to pick up some frozen chili and some ice cream for Russell. 
  Russell wanted Vanilla Bean.  I got some French Vanilla for myself.  They had Light Key Lime Pie ice cream.  I am not into any “light” foods.  I know I should  be but I try to avoid them.  But I decided to get some Light Key Lime Pie ice cream.
  I am eating it right now and it is great.  I love it.  I am sure glad I decided to try something different for a change.

  The last couple of days I been watching a lot of the Military Channel.  That is one of the new channels I got from Charter.  I signed up for their “Digital View and Digital View Plus” package.
  I have taken a look at LOGO the gay channel.  Oh man all their stuff sucks  (errr.. you know what I mean).  I wonder how that channel is doing?  I have not sat and watched it .. but I checked it out a few times for a few minutes and it is not good. 
  I was watching “Morning Joe” when I was getting MSNBC or whatever channel it was on and enjoying it.  Well I would rate it 3 stars (out of five).  Now I do not get that channel but I get Fox Business Network and I can start watching “Imus in the Morning.” 

  I been out of bird seed for over a week.  Ken gave me some seed and a small bird feeder to stick on the window.  So tomorrow I will see if the birds return.  He used the bird feeder on his window and he said the birds never came.
  I was getting my bird seed at Walgreens but I think they may not sell it now.  I got the last bag and it was on sale for $1.49 and the normal price was $6.00 and they were selling their feeders on sale.  
  I am not sure I can afford to feed birds. I am not sure how much I was spending I think it was at least $12.00 a month. 

  I just had a small amount of that Key Lime Pie ice cream because I was not sure I would like it.  I loved it.  But now I sort of got some sort of after taste in my mouth. 
  I guess that is sort of normal for me.  Dairy products do not agree with me.  I do not think I have a problem with hard cheeses but ice cream for sure causes some problems for my system.

Fort Worth Community Garden

  The Star-Telegram has a story about “Fort Worth community garden is gaining growing recognition.” 

  I would like to see community gardens all over Fort Worth and in every large city in the United States.  Sort of a nation return to our old farms from the “old” days.
  It would help with food costs for people and it would be health for people to eat and good for their health to have them out working in a garden.
 
  If I was to win some big massive lottery win that is one of the things I would use the money for… Try and get the community garden movement up and running all over the United States.
  
  You know excess food grown could be given to organizations that feed the poor and homeless.  You could get school children doing it for schools.  Get their little asses out in the garden and away from the cell phones and video games for a bit.

  I hope the community garden movement takes off big time.  It sounds like it is off to a good start in Fort Worth.  But I do not think it will be a success here until I see one down the street from where I live.

White Castle

  Some young people made a video:  “White Castle: The Documentary.”  I love White Castel.

  I first heard about White Castle back in Kansas City in the early 80s on a bulletin board system (Free Thought) run by a friend Dave Hallas.
  He had a great BBS and there was a debate about the best fast food places to eat.  And people were saying how great White Castle was and it was being debated on Dave’s BBS.  There was no White Castle in KC at that time.  So later they did come and I got to eat at one.  I loved their food. 
  When I worked at Research Belton Hospital a few times I took to the ER a lot of the burgers and we all ate them in the ER. 

  Dave wrote a great post on his BBS when his dog died.  If anyone has a copy of it please post it here as a comment or send it to me.  I would like to read it again and I had another KC friend ask if I had it.  I lost the post.  My email address is:  [email protected]

Foods to avoid with gallstones

At 0400 on a Sunday there is not much to do so I decided to check and see what foods I should avoid since I know I do have gallstones.
 
  I found the following on ehow:

    The gallstone pain has been most notable for the last week or so and last week I got a lot of ice cream and I been eating a large disk each day.  (OK sometimes two dishes full each day.) 
    So I need to watch what I eat.  But I eat the food so fast there is no time to watch it.  Hell I am lucky I don’t eat one of my fingers by error.
    I have cut back on Coke, a little, the last few days.

  Fruits and vegetables?  Real men do not eat fruits and vegetables. 

  Well I like baked potatoes.  I like watermelon.  They sell baking potatoes the same place I get the ice cream so I need to do that I guess. 
  The ice cream sure tasted good.  Life sucks when you have to avoid foods that taste so good.  I like baked potatoes but they do not taste as good as Braums French vanilla ice cream with lots and LOTS of chocolate on it. 

Shift work is a “ticking time bomb”

“We all know that getting enough shut-eye is good for us, but now a new study suggests that getting too little sleep can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular disease that can result in early death.

Researchers found if you sleep less than six hours, or have disturbed sleep you have a 48% chance of developing or dying from heart disease, and a 15% chance of having or dying of a stroke.  The study, published in the European Heart Journal, is a meta-analysis of 15 other sleep studies.  A meta-anaylsis integrates a number of studies into one study.     I even worked the midnight shift when I was a welder.  I worked the midnight shift for KW Dart company when I was young.  Thank God, they did away with the midnight shift and I was put on the 2nd shift. 
    Then when I got seniority (we were UAW members) I made it to the day shift.
    When I worked hospital security I do not know how many midnight shifts that I worked…I have never counted it up.. I know I worked 11 years of the midnight shift just at Research Belton Hospital.
     I think all midnight shift workers knew it was hard on us. It was hard on our personal life and it was hard on our health.
    I said it then …. I said that midnight shift workers should be paid a lot more than people that worked the day shift.  I am not taking about 10% more.  I mean a lot more.
    A day shift person would not agree with me…I would always say to them do you want to work midnights..and they would say no… I would take a amount of money and say would you work midnight shift for that …they would say no.. I would just keep increasing the amount until they would say “Hell YES” for that amount I would…Then I would day THAT is what a midnight shift worker should be paid.

  My advice to young people try and not work the midnight shift.  If you do … have regular hours.. sleep and eat as normal as you can.. take care of yourself because you are paying a big price for working midnights.

Groupon

  Groupon is a pretty neat service. You sign up for emails from them and they send you a email from time to time for your local area with special deals. 
  I get coupon and special offers for Fort Worth (TX).

  I got one today that I would love to try out but it is to much money.

 

  It is a place called The Fresh Diet.  They bring meals and snacks to your house.  There special is $29 for three meals and two snacks ($59.99 normal price) or $399 for two weeks of meals and snacks (normal price $769.86).
 
  I would love to do the two weeks and see what my weight did and see how I felt.
