Richard Dawson dead at 79

"Los Angeles (CNN) -- Richard Dawson, the longtime host of "Family Feud" known for planting kisses on female contestants, has died, his son said in a statement Sunday. He was 79.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my father passed away this evening from complications due to esophageal cancer," Gary Dawson said in a post on his Facebook page. "He was surrounded by his family. He was an amazing talent, a loving husband, a great dad, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed but always remembered."

Dawson died Saturday night at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, his son said.

Dawson was the show's host from its premier in 1976 until 1985. He also hosted the show's 1994-1995 season..."

 

Kathryn Joosten dies at 72

“Actress Kathryn Joosten, best known as "Desperate Housewives'" most meddlesome neighbor Karen McKluskey, died Friday after a long battle with lung cancer. She was 72.

Joosten's death came less than three weeks after the emotional "Desperate Housewives" series finale, which saw the redemption and eventual death of Mrs. McKluskey as well.

Joosten won two Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her "Desperate" role, in 2005 and 2008, and was nominated for a third time in 2010.

Prior to her residence on Wisteria Lane, Joosten had another tony TV address: The White House. She played Mrs. Landingham, President Bartlet's (Martin Sheen) secretary on "The West Wing" for the series' first two seasons until her character died in a car accident…”  The HuffingtonPost

I never have seen “Desperate Housewives” and did not know she was on the show.
I did watch “The West Wing” and I loved her on that show.
Very sorry to hear that she has passed away. 

George “Goober” Lindsey dead at 83

George Lindsey (December 17, 1928 - May 6, 2012) was an American character actor, best known for his role as "Goober Pyle" on The Andy Griffith Show, as well as for his tenure on Hee-Haw.

Obituary: Robert Howard Durie M.D.

  I knew Doctor Durie.  I worked as a security officer at Trinity Lutheran Hospital starting in 1975 for five and a half years.  He was head of the Pulmonary unit at TLH.
  We were not friends or anything but he had a great department. 
  He was a very nice man.  I never had any problems with him.
  I was a security supervisor and fire marshal and we took care of OSHA and other safety matters so I had a lot of contact with him and his department and like I said never had any problems.  He was very kind and friendly. 

  It was sort of interesting to me what a big department that he had and how well it was run.
  The hospital that I worked at before going to TLH was St. Joseph Hospital.  We had someone come to our hospital and go to a patient’s room and tell the patient’s wife that he was going to give the woman’s husband a pulmonary treatment.  He asked her to step outside.  She said that they always let her stay but the guy asked her to wait outside.  Then very fast he exited the room. She went into the room and she and her husband found that his billfold was missing. 
  Well later at TLH before Doctor Durie took over the the pulmonary department the United States Marshalls showed up to arrested the head of the pulmonary department, not a doctor, and he shot it out with the police and at lease one officer was shot.  Turns out that was the guy that had come to St. Joseph Hospital and robbed the patient.  His wife, the robber, worked as an ER admitting clerk at our hospital and that is how they knew the patient had a large sum of money.

  So I was always sort of interested in how Doctor Durie had taken a department that had that sort of problem and turned it into the best pulmonary unit in Kansas City.
 
  Also, another story, the director of security at TLH in one of our department meetings told the officers that he had found out that there were a lot of gays in the pulmonary department and he was going to get them all fired.  I told him, in the meeting, I don’t think you can get them fired and I think you better drop that idea right now. 
  He went to administration after our meeting and told them that he had found out that there were gays in the pulmonary department and he was going to find out their names and they would be fired.  The administration told him he was stupid and to drop that idea right now because the only person in danger of getting fired was him.

Baby with ‘bucket list’ dies

  I do not remember if I blogged about this story or not.  I remember reading the story on CNN.
 
  Well the six month old baby has died.

 

“(CNN) -- The 6-month-old girl whose parents created a "bucket list" blog for their daughter after doctors said she would not live past age 2 died Monday, her father said.

Avery Lynn Canahuati, who was born in November with spinal muscular atrophy type 1, died of pulmonary complications related to the genetic disorder, Mike Canahuati said on the blog Tuesday.

"In short, one of her lungs collapsed and she went into cardiac arrest," said Canahuati, 31, of Bellaire, Texas. "I immediately performed CPR on her and was able to bring her back to life, but only for a brief period of time before she passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital…”

 

  How  very very sad. 
  I know I should not say this… But you know how I am.
  Why in the world would you do CPR on the baby with her condition?  Thank God doing CPR did not bring her back.  What she would would have had to go through at the hospital would not have been good. 
  She is in God’s hands now.

 

Betty Arlene Mein 85 passed away April 19, 2012

  I only met Betty Mein a couple of times.  I knew her daughter Becky.

Betty Arlene Mein, 85, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m. Monday, April 23, at Peace Lutheran Church, 8240 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, MO. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church. Betty was born to Bertha (Dellin) and Adolph Schwarz on June 8, 1926. She attended Wayne State Teacher's College and was a one-room schoolteacher for K-8. She married Mike (Milburn) Mein, the love of her life, in 1949. They were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Mike, and their daughter, Becky. She leaves behind daughters, Arlene (Doug) Perkins of Las Vegas, NV, Carol (Steve) McArthur of Gladstone, MO, and Grace Mein of San Bernardino, CA; grandchildren, Angie Ganschow, Mickie (Frank) Beebe, Sarah (Andrew) Hawkins, and Tyler McArthur; and great grandchildren, Tayler, Tripp, Madison, and Isabelle.   Here is the obituary for Becky that I posted here in June of 2008.  It will explain how I many others knew of Becky Mein and how we met her wonderful mother and father.  Becky was very active in the early days of the BBS world and on Howard’s Notebook.

After graduation she continued her love for writing and received awards for short stories. She wrote many stories for herself, family and the church. She was a member of Friends of The Zoo and was active in Adopt a Wild Child. She leaves her parents; sisters Arlene Perkins and her husband Douglas of Las Vegas, Nev., Carol McArthur and her husband Steve of Gladstone, Mo., and Grace Mein of San Bernardino, Calif.; nieces and nephews Angie, Mickie, Sarah, Tyler, Tayler, Tripp, Madison.    “I was so sorry to read about the death of Becky Mein.  She was a wonderful person.  She was a saint.      
    Becky called into Howard’s Notebook back when it was running on a bulletin board system.  I forget the date.  But she was one of the first to call into HNB.  She was using a Apple computer.  Her father had made some changes to the computer so that Becky could use the computer. 
    I may not be correct but I think Becky had Cerebral Palsy.  She had to use a wheelchair and she had little use of her hands.  Your asking how did she dial into HNB and HOW did she get a degree from UMKC?  She did all her typing with a pencil in her mouth!      
   One time her father drove her to a BBS house party.  We then carried her, in her wheelchair, up the stairs to the party.  She had so much fun and everyone just loved her.  She had a wonderful loving family.      
   I am sure things were very hard for her and her family.      
   I only saw a little of Becky.  I think of her often and I will never forget her.      
   She was a wonderful, loving, kind, sweet soul. 
   Rest in Peace Becky.”

 

  Becky Mein and her father Mike Mein have now been joined by Betty Mein in heaven. 

Levon Helm dead at 71

“(CNN) -- Levon Helm, the drummer, multi-instrumentalist and singer for The Band who kept the band's heart for more than three decades, died "peacefully" Thursday afternoon, according to his record label, Vanguard Records. He was 71.

"He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul," the record label's statement said.

A statement from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Helm in 1994, called him the backbone of The Band…”

 

  I am not much of a music fan but “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” has got to be one of the greatest songs of all time.

“Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm (May 26, 1940 – April 19, 2012) was an American rock multi-instrumentalist and actor who achieved fame as the drummer and frequent lead and backing vocalist for The Band.

Helm was known for his deeply soulful, country-accented voice, and creative drumming style highlighted on many of The Band's recordings, such as "The Weight", "Up on Cripple Creek", "Ophelia" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". His 2007 comeback album Dirt Farmer earned the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in February 2008, and in November of that year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #91 in the list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2010, Electric Dirt, his 2009 follow-up to Dirt Farmer, won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, an inaugural category in 2010. In 2011, his live album Ramble at the Ryman was nominated for the Grammy in the same category and won.

On April 17, 2012, his wife and daughter announced on Helm's website that he was "in the final stages of his battle with cancer" and thanked fans while requesting prayers. Helm died on April 19, 2012, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City…’

Dick Clark dead at age 82

“Dick Clark -- famed TV producer and "New Year's Rockin' Eve" host -- died from a massive heart attack this morning ... TMZ has learned.
Clark's rep tells TMZ, the TV icon had been in St. John's hospital in L.A. after undergoing an outpatient procedure last night. Clark suffered the "massive" heart attack following the procedure. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Clark suffered a significant stroke in late 2004. With speech ability still impaired, Clark returned to his New Year's Rockin' Eve show on December 31, 2005/January 1, 2006. Subsequently, he appeared at the Emmy Awards on August 27, 2006, and every New Year's Rockin' Eve show through the 2011/2012 show.

Mike Wallace dead at 93

“Myron Leon "Mike" Wallace (May 9, 1918 – April 7, 2012) was an American journalist, game show host, actor, and media personality. During his career, which spanned over sixty years, he interviewed a wide range of prominent newsmakers.

He was one of the original correspondents for CBS' 60 Minutes which debuted in 1968. Wallace retired as a regular full-time correspondent in 2006, but still appeared occasionally on the series until 2008.

Earl Scruggs dead at 88

"(CNN) -- Earl Scruggs, whose distinctive picking style and association with Lester Flatt cemented bluegrass music's place in popular culture, died Wednesday of natural causes at a Nashville hospital, his son Gary Scruggs said. He was 88.

"I realize his popularity throughout the world went way beyond just bluegrass and country music," Gary Scruggs told CNN. "It was more than that."

For many of a certain age, Scruggs' banjo was part of the soundtrack of an era on "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" -- the theme song from the CBS sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies," which aired on CBS from 1962 to 1971 and for decades afterward in syndication.

But much more than that, he popularized a three-finger picking style that brought the banjo to the fore in a supercharged genre, and he was an indispensable member of the small cadre of musical greats who created modern bluegrass music..."
